At a glance

In the early 1300s, the famous Sufi saint Hazrat Sheikh Shah Farid stayed here. Faridpur Kotyali Thana was established on 10th September 1894 after his name. Then on 1st December 1984, Faridpur was named Sadar Upazila for administrative decentralization.

         Kumar river, Bhubenshwar river and Padma river flow inside this upazila. Historians believe that Faridpur city originated in the early fifteenth century. Mughal rule began in 1666 AD. Chowkbazar was then established as the center of trade and commerce of the city. The term Chawkbazar is also derived from Mughal sources. Gowalchamat, Khabaspur, Ambikapur Hindu ashrams, monasteries, temples were built for religious purposes. Niltuli Road is indicative of the development of that time. 1760 AD: Faridpur comes under British rule. In the late 1800s and early 19th centuries, brick-and-stone buildings, Western-style bungalows began to emerge in the city.

             78 years of British period from 1889 to 1947, 23 years of Pakistan period from 1948 to 1971, 48 years of Bangladesh period from 1971 to 2019, it can be seen that the urban development of Faridpur city has sometimes been at a slow pace, sometimes at a somewhat accelerated pace, and sometimes due to various reasons. (Faridpur District) Area: 407.02 sq km. Location: 23°29' to 23°34' North latitude and 89°43' to 89°56' East longitude. Boundaries: Goland and Harirampur upazilas in the north, Nagarkanda upazilas in the south, Charbhadrasan and Harirampur upazilas in the east, Boalmari, Madukhali and Rajbari Sadar upazilas in the west. The upazila town is located on the bank of river Kumar.

Population 413485; Male 213765, female 199720. Muslims 367829, Hindus 44615, Buddhists 967, Christians 31 and others 43.

Watershed Major rivers: Padma, Kumara, Old Kumara, Bhubaneswar; Chapa Beel, Hari Beel, Dhol Samudra, Bilmamunpur Kool, Vulture Beel and Tepa Open Lake (artificial) are notable.

Administration Faridpur Sadar Thana was formed in 1896 and the Thana was converted into Upazila in 1983.
